Mexico’s proximity to the United States is proving to be a boon for many Americans in need of medical and dental care. Medicare does not pay for dental work, so that also draws many elderly customers south of the border.

Mexico is a convenient destination for many Americans in need of dental work, and surgical procedures. Prices may be as much as two-thirds below those in the United States. At Los Algodones, a Mexican town on the border with California and with a population of only 10,000, dental offices outnumber restaurants 49 to nine. Similar towns may be found along the entire Mexican border, especially across from Texas.

US hospital firms are now investing in the construction of new care facilities in Mexico, to serve Americans travelling for affordable surgery. San Jose Hospital plans a medical centre in Monterrey. Grupo Star Medica, the builder of seven Mexican centres in five years, is speeding up an expansion aimed at Americans. Christus Health, based in Texas, owns six hospitals in Mexico. Dallas-based International Hospital Corp, the operator of three hospitals in Mexico, is building a fourth in the central city of Puebla.

Surgery in Mexico could change your life without spending too much. Bridget Flanagan, a 21-year-old college student from Olympia, Washington, was left helpless after finding out the surgery cost for an obesity procedure back home. The only way she could afford it was to travel 2000 miles to Hospital San Jose in Monterrey, Mexico. The procedure was a success. Bridget lost 45 pounds off her peak weight of 275 and saved $6,600.

The shopping scene in Monterrey is excellent. You’ll find many international labels and designer houses in the upper-end malls. There are two artesanal cooperatives that cater to the tourist souvenir market (one on Morelos near the Macroplaza, the other on Hidalgo near the Holiday Inn Centro), as well as UPS stores in several major shopping malls.

The upper-end malls consist of four very large, modern malls. These malls are not unlike malls elsewhere in the world, and they’re usually anchored by both Mexican (Liverpool, Palacio del Hierro, etc.) and U.S. (Sears, JCPenny) department store chains. The major malls in Monterrey include:

Morelos, also known as the Zona Rosa, is a pedestrian friendly street lined with busy shops, small malls, shopping arcades, and filled with street vendors and musicians.

Local character is on display on the Carretera Nacional, heading out of the city towards the Cola de Caballo. A 1-mile stretch of highway near the town of Santiago is lined with small open-air shops, restaurants, and marketplaces. You can get great deals on rustic furniture, clothing, household goods, homemade food products, and just about anything else you can imagine. Parking can be difficult on weekends, but the selection is at its best and the atmosphere is the closest thing you’ll find to the big outdoor markets boasted by cities in the rest of the latin world.

Manuel Uribe Garza (born June 11, 1965), a 43-year-old man from Monterrey, Nuevo León, Mexico, is one of the heaviest people in medical history. After reaching a peak weight of around 560 kg (1,235 lbs, 88 stone) and being unable to leave his bed since 2001, Uribe lost considerable weight with the help of doctors and nutritionists, and by following the Zone diet. Uribe drew worldwide attention when he appeared on the Televisa television network in January 2006, but turned down offers for gastric surgery in Italy. Teotihuacan was at its peak between 150 BC. and 450 AD, with an estimated 200,000 residents, making it then the largest city in the Americas, larger than Rome and likely the largest city in the world during that age. Yet experts are uncertain as to who built it and why it was suddenly abandoned around 700 AD. For years, archaeologists thought the city was of Toltec origin, but have since determined that the Toltec civilization came later, as did the Aztecs who believed Teotihuacan was a divine city. Highway Construction

Mexico's Communications and Transport Ministry started seeking bids Thursday for a concession to operate, upgrade and expand toll roads in northeastern Mexico.
The tender calls for the upgrading and construction of 451 kilometers of roads, as well as the construction of the country's first international rail bridge in over a century, the ministry said in a press release.
Dow Jones also reports the 30-year concession includes several highways from the northeastern industrial hub of Monterrey to the U.S. border, and three border bridges. It also includes construction of other roads in the area.
Bids for the highway package are due by the end of March, 2009, and the concession is expected to begin July 31, the ministry said.
The highways being tendered are among those that the government took over in a bailout of private toll roads after the 1995 financial crisis. Proceeds from the new concessions are being used to pay debt related to the bailout and for additional road works.
The northeastern road package is the third under the program. A first package was awarded in 2007 and a second is in process.

Ternium SA to invest $4.2 billion

Latin American steel company Ternium SA said Monday it will invest $4.2 billion over the next five years to build a flat steel plant in Mexico to bolster production capacity.

The company, whose principal operations are in Argentina and Mexico, said the design and construction will take place in two phases over five years. Ternium said it believes demand for value-added flat steel products in Mexico will grow steadily, driven by new construction and industrial development.

The project's initial phase involves building a flat-rolled mini mill in the Monterrey area, intended to produce two million tons per year of hot rolled coils. Ternium expects that this new facility will cost $2.7 billion and will be in full production within the next four years.

The second phase covers the construction of a cold rolled and galvanizing plant, including a pickling line and a cold rolled tandem mill with annual capacity of one million tons of cold rolled coils and a hot-dipped galvanizing line with annual capacity of 300,000 tons, to serve the industrial and commercial markets.

Ternium expects this second phase, to be completed by 2013, will cost $1.5 billion.

A majestic project, which could be the best modern stadium in Mexico and Latin America or even the World is in the making. In a first class city like Monterrey, a stadium as modern and luxurious as this one is needed. This stadium is projected for the FC Rayados Monterrey and FC Tigres, professional soccer teams. It will cost 300 million dollars, and it will have the capacity for 75 thousand spectators, but both teams denied to particepate as The Rayados are already building their new stadium, and FC Tigres are staying with their current stadium. The governor of the state has said that it is still a project, nothing more. Its construction is doubtful, but as the title says (in Spanish) , “We’re allowed to dream”. But it would be so cool! This would take Monterrey and Mexico too, to higher levels. This stadium could be as good or better than Wembley. It would be an awesome architectural landmark in the city, but its sad that the city’s professional soccer clubs have decided not to invest in it. However, the project hasn’t been cancelled, so anything could happen.

Mexican low-cost carrier VivaAerobus has introduced a low-cost combo to the downtown area of Texas cities Austin and San Antonio by linking to bus shuttles. The bus takes passengers from downtown Austin or San Antonio to their respective airports where they check in for their VivaAerobus flights to several Mexico cities. The shuttle service costs $20 per person, and according to the air carrier's Public Relations Director Juan Carlos Zuazua, "It's a great value in convenience and time gained for passengers who fly, for instance, to and from Monterrey and Cancun." Zuazua also says airfares between San Antonio and Mexico have increased sharply recently, and this new service is a bargain for business and leisure travelers on a budget. In San Antonio, free parking is available at the bus terminals for shuttle users.

John Deere moves to MTY

Deere & Co. disclosed Tuesday that it intends to shutter its 800-worker manufacturing facility in Welland, Ontario, and to transfer the Canadian plant's production to existing Deere factories in Wisconsin and Mexico. The Moline maker of agricultural equipment said the closure will generate after-tax charges of about $90 million, with roughly half of that amount coming in Deere's fiscal fourth quarter. Shutdown of the Welland plant, which makes "Gator" brand utility vehicles and other equipment, will be completed by the end of 2009. The Canadian plant's utility-vehicle production will be shifted to Deere's plant in Horicon, Wisc., Deere said; its production of cutting and loading attachments will go to existing Deere plants in Monterrey and Saltillo, Mexico.
